And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Romans 12:2 NKJV

In Romans 12:2 that Greek word translated to ‘transformed’ is metamorphoō. Metamorphoō is defined as; to transform, metamorphose, change, and transfigure. This word is used four times within the New Testament in: Matthew 17:2, Mark 9:2, Romans 12:2 and 2 Corinthians 3:18. 

Half of these scriptures refer to when Jesus’s appearance was transformed on the mountain with Peter, James and John. “As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them.” (Mark 9:2-3 NLT). In the gospel of Matthew it reads as: “As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.” (17:2 NLT)

What I love about the Bible is this exact thing: Word choices and how intentional God was when writing the Bible! In Romans 12 it speaks to renewing our minds with the word of God.  Paul picks a word that is used to describe a physical transformation, saying that our minds should be so renewed by the word of God we physically look different. The word chosen here paints a picture of transforming not only our inner self but our outward appearance as well. 

If our mind is transformed by the word of God, we ourselves should look and act differently. The word of God should move us into motion. Romans 12:2 breaks it down for us… Our minds should be renewed by the word of God so much that we are physically transformed by it. With the transformation we should be moved into action to show the world that God’s way is good, acceptable and perfect! 

The word of God transforms us in one direction… it should move us to spread the love of God to those around us. Sharing the Gospel so others may be transformed by the word of God, renewing their minds to the perfect will of God for their lives. 

I challenge you don’t just be transformed on the inside but be “metamorphoō”-ed, by renewing your mind to the word of God!

I am transforming my mind with the word of God. 

I will not be conformed by the world.

I am being transformed from the inside out by renewing my mind to the word of God. 

I will aim to walk in the perfect will of God for my life. 

God brings out the best in me!
