Revelation

Saul was making his way to Damascus, ready and willing to capture and arrest any men and women who were followers of “The Way”. “Just outside the city, a brilliant light flashing from heaven suddenly exploded all around him. Falling to the ground, he heard a booming voice say to him, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’” Acts 9:3-4
From this moment forward, Saul would be different. His whole life would be changed. What was this light? This light was the light of revelation. Revelation is a moment of divine insight that changes everything. It’s that Moses-in-the-bush moment, when God reveals a facet of himself or His truth to us that we’ve never seen before. And all Moses had to do was ask for it. God had revealed Himself to Saul, better known to us as Paul.
The thing is, God is open to being known, but He is God. As such, while He is open and willing to be known, He doesn’t lay every single thing about himself out on the table at once. We are invited into relationship with Him, and we get to know Him as we seek Him. He is so generous with sharing Himself as we take the time to get to know Him. Revelation is like this light – when a light comes on, it shows you things you couldn’t see before. Revelation about God helps us see things about Him we didn’t know.
And what do we do with revelation? Ephesians 4 and 5 help us with this!
Ephesians 4 verse 23-24 in the Passion Translation says, “Now it’s time to be made new by every revelation that’s been given to you. And to be transformed as you embrace the glorious Christ-within as your new life and live in union with him!”
Ephesians 5:8 – “Once your life was full of sin’s darkness, but now you have the very light of our Lord shining through you because of your union with him. Your mission is to live as children flooded with his revelation-light! And the supernatural fruits of his light will be seen in you—goodness, righteousness, and truth.” (emphasis mine)
What happened to Paul and Moses as they got revelation about God? It changed their behavior. It changed their entire life. Saul went from a self-righteous, hyper-religious zealot to a man that would write letters to others to encourage them in their faith, all while shackled in a disgusting jail cell. Moses went from being a timid shepherd to the bold leader and spokesperson of God’s entire nation of people.
Once this revelation light is yours, it changes your life. It changes you at your core because it’s something that God has shown you, and no one can take it from you. You know God more, and that will change your behavior.
So if revelation is this great – which it is – you might be saying, “Okay, great. How do I get it?”
Glad you asked! There are prayers in the Bible that Paul wrote (surprise surprise – he definitely knew the value of revelation!) that we can use as models in our asking. Check out the prayers in Ephesians 1:15-23 and 3:14-21, and Colossians 1:9-14. The point is – ask! Seek God! He wants to share Himself with you. And you’ll be so glad you did! Watch your life change as you know Him more.
