Don't Slip

Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip.
Hebrews 2:1 KJV
In the previous month we spoke about not looking back. When we are not looking back we are moving forward. Moving forward means entering new seasons. I am currently entering a new season, a season of being a wife and a stepmother. Within this new season my routine has been altered and at times I question if I am slipping back. However one needs to realize, myself included, that new seasons can be different but different isn’t necessarily bad.
To not slip back we need to remember what we have heard. The Bible truths we have learned and lived by shouldn’t be forgotten no matter the seasons we are in. My devotional time might look different but my relationship with Jesus does not look different. At first I was feeling guilty that I wasn’t spending as much time on the BIble as I used to.
Single Kelly used to spend hours at a coffee shop or in bed reading, studying and writing. Wife/Stepmom Kelly does not have hours to spend at a coffee shop. My days are playing a board game, making dinner, doing laundry, driving kids to practice etc. I am sure many of you have felt similar, perhaps a different situation but the same change of life, experiencing a new season.
One of the easiest truths to remember is God loves us. When we start to feel guilty or we are not enough that is one of the truths I hold on to the hardest. That is the truth that will never slip away. In Hebrews 10:22 it says, “… let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” God has cleansed us of a guilty conscience.
Anytime I feel guilty, scriptures like this come to mind (1 Peter 4:16, Psalm 103:12, Psalm 31:1, Romans 8:1). Love doesn’t produce guilt. If we are focusing on His love we are less likely to slip back. Who slips away from a loving Father? Who slips away from someone who forgives their sins, heals their illnesses and calls them precious? In new seasons, no matter what the situation is, focus on the love of God. The opposite of ‘slip away’ is ‘stay’. Remember and hold firm to the truth of God’s love and you will have a staying power.
Take a moment right now and reflect on how your life has changed, perhaps you have slipped away. God’s love the solid truth we stand on, hold out that hand and God will help you come back and stay. We all have areas we are working on, reworking on… I pray that this devotional, these scriptures turn you around and erases that guilt, that shame. God’s love is the non slip grip!
